The IBRO-APRC Ulaanbaatar Associate School on Behavioral and Translational Neuroscience was held from the 7th to the 12th of August, 2023, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. This school attracted a diverse group of participants, including psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors, and researchers. During the school, all participants were provided with theoretical knowledge and basic techniques of behavioral and translational neuroscience, particularly covering basic science research to public health applications of neuroscientific methods.
The opening ceremony of the IBRO school was held on the 7th of August at the National Center for Mental Health. At the opening ceremony, the following individuals delivered the welcoming remarks:
- Bayarmaa Vanchindorj, President of the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH)
- Tsolmon Jadamba, Scientific Advisor and Founding Former Director of the Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI)
- Battuvshin Lkhagvasuren, President of the Mongolian Neuroscience Society (MNS)
During the school, the students were introduced to theoretical knowledge and basic techniques of behavioral and translational neuroscience, particularly covering from basic science research to public health applications of neuroscientific methods. Developing animal models for behavioral disorders, testing/screening on behavioral symptoms using neuroscientific methods, and applying public health research on behavioral disorders were introduced. The school included 4 invited lectures by international faculties from the USA, Malaysia, Japan, and China and 4 lectures, 8 tech talks, and 4 laboratory hands-on modules by international and local faculties. In group discussions, participants were provided with neuroethical issues and encouraged to give both poster and oral presentations about their current studies. They were asked to prepare for a Journal club by using a computer search for relevant articles on a given topic. During the school, all participants received kits comprising a guidebook, notepad, pen, and other essential items. The guidebook for the IBRO-APRC Ulaanbaatar Associate School on Behavioral and Translational Neuroscience included detailed information on the school. At the end of the school, all students were asked to fill in an evaluation form with questions related to their appreciation of the overall quality of the workshop and each session, skills, and concepts acquired, and recommendations for improving the quality of the training. Starting on day 5, students were facilitated to join the lectures and symposia at the 10th Annual Meeting of the Mongolian Neuroscience Society. We organized the press conference for the 10th Annual Meeting of the Mongolian Neuroscience Society and the IBRO-APRC Ulaanbaatar Associate School on Behavioral and Translational Neuroscience. During the press conference, the contributions of the IBRO to the development of brain science in Mongolia were comprehensively introduced to the public. We were asked to give interviews to many TVs, newspapers, and public journals, including the National Broadcasting Television and Radio, the largest media channel in Mongolia.
